The value of Colposcopy for Early Detection of Cervial Cancer

Abstract
This study was performed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of colposcopic examination by comparing colposcopic findings with cytologic diagnosis and final biopsy results. The colposcopic findings were described by the detailed grading of atypical transformation zone findings.
The colposcopic examinations were undertaken in 585 patients with abnormal cytologic smears and/or eroded cervix lesions with suspected malignancy seen at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chonnam University Hospital, Kwangju, Korea from January 1, 1984. through Dec. 31, 1986.
The results were as follows:
1. Colposcopic examinations were satisfactory in 96.2% and unsatisfactory group was noted in 3.8%.
2. The accuracy rate of cytologic diagnosis was 81.9 % and coposcopic im¡þpression was 87.4%.
3. The accuracy rate of colposcopic impression was 75.8% in the diagnosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and was far superior to cytologic examinations.
4. Among 95 cases in which colposcopic directed biopsy were performed, more advanced lesions were disclosed in 8 cases (12.6 %) .
